Green Mountain Scenic Overlook offers a view like no other

One of Lake County’s newest public lands offers visitors an unparalleled vantage point. Featuring a 132-foot elevated boardwalk leading to a 20×20 foot overlook offering exceptional views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Lake Apopka and the Orlando skyline, it’s no wonder the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead is becoming one of the county’s most popular natural venues.

Located along the State Designated Green Mountain Scenic Byway, the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead will become the western gateway to the 16-mile Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Area Trail, with an expected completion date in 2015.World class triathletes are already touting the trail as an ideal training ground.

The trail will connect to the rest of the Lake Apopka Loop Trail and allow users to travel across the North Shore to Magnolia Park in Orange County.

The Trailhead and Scenic Overlook was developed in partnership with the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Green Mountain Scenic Byway Committee. Amenities include restrooms, drinking fountain, bicycle pump, bike racks, covered pavilion with picnic tables, educational kiosks and signage, bird and bee boxes, the observation tower, restrooms, and a switchback trail from the parking area to the railroad bed.

The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is located in southeast Lake County and west Orange County, begins at the intersection of County Roads 455 and 561 and winds south through some of the highest hills of peninsular Florida.

The area is an ideal location for bird and butterfly watching, hiking, bicycling, day-tripping, picnicking and family events. Nearly 100 species of birds and nearly 20 species of butterflies have already been observed at the property. Visitors should watch for Bald Eagles, Short-tailed Hawks, Swallow-tailed Kites, and numerous songbirds during appropriate times of the year. The Overlook and Trailhead are located at 20700 County Road 455 in Ferndale, and is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk.

  1. I have walked the overlook trail on a regular basis. The job that was done with the native plant restoration(planting) was exceptional!

I particularly like the switchbacks as they descend the hill. The grade was designed in such a way that the hiker hardly realizes he is going up a very steep hill.

Each time I go there I see more species of native plants. It is amazing that by opening the tree canopy just enough to allow for the trail then dormant species will grow and yet we hikers will will enjoy a shady walk in the hot Florida climate.

I am so glad you did not resort to fire.

A heart felt thanks to Gallus Quigley for his hands on contribution it is truly a legacy.

  2. Are there any bike paths in any part of this county besides Clermont? Any thoughts on putting bike lanes in on the scenic roads????
